Our picks: Palace of the Popes tickets and tours
The walking tour suits a first visit because the guide and the palace entry come in one booking. Take the palace-and-bridge ticket if you prefer to explore alone, and the city pass if museums are also on your list.

The reduced rate does not apply to everyone. You must show proof that you qualify. The combined ticket is valid from the day of your visit to the next day, with one entry to each site, so you cannot use it to enter the same site twice. For most visitors who also want the bridge, the combined ticket is the logical choice. If you only want the palace, take the single ticket.

The rebuilt route and the audio guide
What changed in 2026.
A new visitor route opened on 1 May 2026, and the work continues until spring 2027. The palace offers a smartphone web app called Les Clefs du Palais in 6 languages. A free tablet guide in 7 languages may also be available. Do not count on a tablet being included in your ticket. Bring a charged phone and headphones in case your visit uses the app.
Not every room is guaranteed to be open and fully accessible during the works, so check at the ticket desk on the day.
Plan the visit around the palace
The bridge, the rock and the car.
The bridge
Pont Saint-Bénézet keeps 4 of its original 22 arches. It is a fragment you can visit, not a crossing to the other bank. The bridge audio guide comes in 14 languages.
The bridge →The Rocher des Doms
The rock above the Rhône reopened on 28 February 2026 after the first restoration phase. Further work is planned before summer 2027.
Things to do in Avignon →Parking
The park-and-ride lots Italiens and Piot are free, each with a free shuttle. Traffic directions in the old town changed on 20 May 2026, so an old route sketch may be wrong.
Wine next door
Tasting workshops take place in the Carré du Palais, opposite the palace. Each has a set date, so book a date.
Wine tours from Avignon →The popes in Avignon
A short summary of the history.
Clement V came to Avignon in 1309, and Gregory XI returned to Rome in early 1377. Not every pope in between stayed there without a break: Urban V was in Rome from 1367 to 1370. Avignon had 7 regular popes and 2 schismatic popes. The schismatic Benedict XIII fled the palace in 1403, and the Great Western Schism lasted from 1378 to 1417. The full story is on the Avignon papacy and Rhône wine page.
