The Roman Theatre of Orange at a glance
Orange in southern France is known for its Roman theatre, with a tall stage wall and tiered seating. A theatre ticket includes an audioguide and the museum. The full price is €11.50 in 2026. The town's Arc de Triomphe is run as a separate monument.
Orange is also one of the communes inside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine area, together with Châteauneuf-du-Pape itself, Bédarrides, Courthézon and Sorgues. That makes the town an easy addition to a day of wine, as you can see in our Châteauneuf-du-Pape guide.

The Arc de Triomphe and the festival
The Arc de Triomphe is run as its own monument. Do not count on the theatre ticket opening the arch, because it does not cover a paid visit inside it. Check on site what you can enter around the arch.
The summer opera and music festival, the Chorégies d'Orange, uses the theatre. In 2026 its programme ran from 19 June to 18 July, with evening performances. Visiting hours can change on rehearsal and performance days. Dates for 2027 should be checked before you plan around them.
Orange and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine area
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape area has been an independent cru since 1936 and makes red and white wine. Grenache noir shapes the reds, and the whites include Grenache blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. Round pebbles called galets roulés are part of the terroir, but the soils also include sand and sandstone, so not every plot is covered in stones. Above the village stands the castle ruin, built under John XXII between 1317 and 1333. A keep, the south wall and a lower level with the papal cellar survive, so see it as a ruin, not a complete palace.
From Avignon the bus route runs on line 902 to Sorgues and then on line 922 to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In the village the stops are Pierre de Luxembourg and Louis Pasteur. Check the current timetable before you go.
Make Orange part of a wine trip
Three ways to combine the town with the region.
Add Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The village is a wine area in its own right, an independent cru since 1936 for red and white wine. Its castle ruin is open to visit, and the village is easy to pair with Orange. See the Châteauneuf-du-Pape page.
Add Vaison-la-Romaine
If the Roman theatre interests you, the Roman districts of Vaison-la-Romaine offer a second Roman day, with their own pass and their own hours.
Taste in moderation
The driver does not drink. French law sets the limit at 0.5 g/l blood alcohol, and 0.2 g/l in the probationary period. No number of tasting glasses is a safe amount to drive on. A guided tour solves the problem. See wine tours from Avignon.
